The Goldreed Industrial Design Award 2022 seeks designs that capture innovation, sustainability and harmony
Designed with a forward-looking vision but firmly rooted in tradition, the Goldreed Industrial Design Award is an international design award driven by globalization, specialization and market orientation. Based in China’s Xiongan New Area, the award was originally established to discover the future of design, inspire future quality of life, and strengthen the design of future cities by exploring the Chinese concept of “harmony”.
The prize, whose participation is free, is aimed at designers, design teams, design studios, companies, universities and institutes from all countries and creative fields. Entries can be real products or conceptual in nature, while aligning with the mission of the Goldreed Industrial Design Award (GIDA) to help lead better lives, improve industries and balance urban life with nature.
The Goldreed Industrial Design Award is divided into 8 different categories: Manufacturing Equipment, Means of Transportation, Home Life, Culture and Creativity, Sports and Healthcare, Public Facilities, Information Processing and Communication Design. Among the entries, the jury names 100 designs to have won the GIDA, of which only a few win the Good Design Award, the Future Star Award and the Gold Award, with only one entry winning the Best of the Best Award. Prize winners take home a grand total of 4,500,000 RMB ($706,680), with the top of the top winners receiving 1,000,000 RMB ($157,040) as cash prizes.
Winners receive their awards at the GIDA Awards Ceremony held during Hebei International Industrial Design Week in September. The awards ceremony is attended by media personnel, industry personnel and even venture capitalists. Besides the cash prize and trophy/certificate, GIDA winners also have exclusive opportunities to connect with potential customers, business partners and the media. The winning creations are further exhibited at virtual and physical exhibitions throughout the year. Here are some selected winners of the Goldreed Industrial Design Award 2021!
EMU high privacy forward berth (best of the best)
In order to adapt to the complex operating environment of China’s high-speed railway and the needs of long-distance routing operations, Mr. Huang Junhui and his team pioneered the design of a new type of UEM with longitudinal crosspieces of great capacity and high confidentiality. This new sleeper has a capacity of 60 passengers, a 50% increase over the previous capacity of 40 passengers. Plus, it also provides extra comfort, while giving each group of passengers their own private quarters, reminiscent of the pod hotels found in Japan!
Uphold Cup (good product design award)
Designed using origami principles, the Uphold Mug is a collapsible, portable travel mug that converts from a tumbler to a flat disc when not in use. The cup materials are food grade, BPA free and can carry beverages up to 100°C in temperature. The Uphold Cup uses Polypropylene Polymer (PP) as its body material which is relatively rigid, yet provides the ability to bend multiple times (live hinge) without breaking.
Island (Future Star Award)
Island is a concept driverless double-decker tram designed for the city of Hong Kong for use in the post-pandemic era. Island is an exemplary blend of industrial design, transport design, public design, urban mobility and sustainability. Using public transport is crucial to keeping pollution levels low, especially when the circulating virus first attacks your respiratory system. Ensuring that public transport facilitates social distancing was also of utmost importance during the design process. “We wanted to reinvent public transport in the post-COVID era from a prevention perspective. Denoising Pillow (Future Star Award)
Designed to function not only as a neck pillow, but also as an earmuff, the Noise Canceling Pillow is perhaps the perfect travel accessory. It gives you the ability to cushion your neck, while covering your ears in case you find yourself in a particularly noisy environment. Plus, the pillow can simply be rotated to use as a forehead pillow so you can rest your head on a table. Several birds with one stone, huh!
Bus X-ferry (Future Star Award)
This innovative vehicle bridges the gap between ferry-buses and aerobridges. Since not all airports are big enough to provide an airlift for all flights, the X-ferry bus offers a nifty alternative with its massive hydraulic cabin. The bus looks and functions like a normal transport vehicle. It transports passengers from the boarding gate to their flight, but instead of having them disembark and climb the stairs to the entrance of the plane, the entire passenger cabin of the X-ferry rises up, docking at the entrance of the plane! Passengers can get off the bus and board the plane directly, a practical feature for passengers, especially people with reduced mobility, and even more so in bad weather!
Pop-Up Booster (Good Product Design Award)
The Pop-Up Booster is a portable, collapsible booster seat that relies on origami folding patterns to become a strong, sturdy seat when open, and folds down to a flat profile when you’re done. ‘use. The super strong origami structure is designed to withstand up to 20,000 impacts up to 75 kg. It’s also designed to hold your baby securely using its 5-strap harness, fits most chairs, and is perfect for families on the go and hospitality spaces.
AIREADER (Good Concept Design Award)
Although the AIREADER looks very much like a fancy successor to the Google Glas HUD display, it’s actually a wearable accessory for the visually impaired, acting as a pair of eyes for them as they navigate the world. . Studies have shown that approximately 80% of blind people retain vision and still react to light. AIREADER is a future blind reading device based on user experience design and AI algorithm. It uses the remaining light sense of blind people to come up with the design concept of “signal light”. A scanner on the front of the device observes the world and transmits it to the wearer using powerful light signals that flash directly into the wearer’s eyes. This allows them to tap into a sense that was once dormant, easing the load on other senses like their sense of touch or hearing. With support for AI algorithms such as text recognition, object recognition, and gesture recognition, it is possible to empower blind people with the ability to read, recognize objects, and recognize road signs.
NEOLIX X3 (Gold Award for Best Smart Design)
