Taiwan’s Industrial Technology Department Showcases Innovative Technologies at TIE 2021

The TIE Discovering Technology Treasures pavilion offers two major axes: technologies crucial for future industrial modernization and innovative startups with high potential in industries. DoIT Director General Chyou-Huey Chiou stressed that innovation is the key to improving the global competitiveness of from Taiwan Industries. The DoIT has a long history of supporting national R&D activities involving more than 1,200 technologies. These research teams are encouraged to transfer technologies to existing industries, adopt an entrepreneurial mindset and create startups. This route is similar to how from Taiwan the wafer industry has grown from startups and created significant economic value.

DoIT introduces crucial technologies for industrial upgrading and discovers potential technologies to train startups

AI has brought significant business opportunities for the tech industry. In recent years, there have been many attempts to integrate AI into healthcare for the benefit of the public. DoIT supported the Institute for Information Industry (III) to develop the AI ​​Mammography Assistant, an innovative application that reduces the wait time for breast cancer test results from two months to one week, allowing patients with breast cancer to start treatment as soon as possible.

As society ages, chronic diseases become more prevalent and the number of cancer patients increases, increasing the demand for drugs and medical care. DoIT commissioned the National Health Research Institute to develop DBPR115, a new small molecule drug conjugate (SMDC). This can potentially lead to new cancer drugs with low dosage, low side effects, and high treatment results.

In response to the EU’s carbon tax policy in 2023 and the shift to green supply chains by major international manufacturers, the DoIT is also offering carbon reduction solutions to industries. For example, the DoIT commissioned ITRI to synthesize the CO2 in low carbon methanol to provide industrial use and achieve circular recycling.

With the development of electric vehicles (EVs), many are looking for innovative battery technology that offers fast charging, greater capacities and increased safety. ITRI ​​has developed a networked epoxy amide polymer electrolyte (NAEPE) for electric vehicles. NAEPE can replace flammable liquid electrolytes and can be cured at room temperature, maintaining high ionic conductivity while improving high voltage stability. The temperature of the NAEPE flash point increases after curing, making it flame retardant and creating a high temperature life cycle, thus solving the safety concerns of high energy lithium ion (LIB) batteries. Semiconductor LIBs using NAEPE can be connected in modules, which leads to the development of individual cells exceeding 10 volts and greatly increases the energy density.

For startups, this online exhibit showcases ITRI’s hydrogen energy startup team, which uses hydrogen batteries to directly generate electricity with hydrogen left over from manufacturing processes. This technology may offer manufacturers a better low-carbon alternative, by implementing a comprehensive business model to shorten time to market. DoIT also helped Lextar Electronics to develop the special ultra-thin QD-LED (U-light) packaging technology. This technology increases monitor brightness by 30%, displays more realistic colors, saves energy and reduces carbon emissions. This is the only monitor packaging product in the world that is both super thin (90%).

TDP for a better life: eight video clips showcasing new technologies

DoIT has continuously supported the development of innovative technologies to solve industry problems and / or meet user demands. Eight R&D teams are invited this year to share their new technologies and R&D processes via pre-recorded videos, such as the total in-office digital restoration solution developed by the Metal Industries Research & Development Center (MIRDC). This technology allows dentists to quickly create intraoral images. In the past, doing dentures took more than a week; but with this technology, it can be produced in eight hours, greatly reducing patient waiting time. The videos will be released online on October 14.
