Department description

Xi’an Jiaotong University-Liverpool Industrial Design Department was established in 2013 with the aim of training a new generation of industrial and product designers capable of meeting the challenges associated with the ongoing social, cultural and economic transformation. from China. With the announcement of China’s plan to achieve carbon neutrality by 2060, in line with its 14th five-year plan, the Industrial Design Department has positioned itself at the forefront of Chinese creative industries by training design innovators. and leaders of the transition to a carbonized circular economy. Thanks to a multidisciplinary international team of academic staff in a dynamic teaching and learning ecosystem, the undergraduate, masters and doctoral programs offered by our department combine speculative research and applied research. The talents and individual interests of students are nurtured, shaping strong and unique exit profiles capable of excelling in an increasingly competitive market.

All programs in our department are accredited by the internationally recognized Chartered Society of Designers, based in the UK.

Roles and responsibilities:

  • Teach at a design studio and teach a one-semester module, including academic mentoring of students
  • Research in the classical academic field through research projects, innovations and publications or through industrial / product design or digital manufacturing practice. Publications at a level appropriate for the discipline and designation. Applications for external research funds
  • Service to support the administrative side of the department, school and university or extracurricular activities for students, staff, discipline.
  • Complete the PG certification unless already holding a teaching certification or similar
  • Participation in departmental activities and administrative life.
  • Administrative responsibility positions at departmental / cluster / school level.
  • Typical distribution of teaching: research: service is 40:40:20.

Essential qualifications / experiences

Successful candidates for the post of teacher / assistant professor must have:

  • Doctorate in Industrial / Product Design with two years of teaching experience
  • Master in Industrial / Product Design with at least 2 years of practical and educational experience
  • Fluent English

Successful candidates for higher grades must also have:

  • Doctorate in Industrial / Product Design with a minimum of 7 years of academic experience and excellence in academic achievement
  • Masters Degree in Industrial / Product Design with at least 10 years of practice including extensive senior management experience equivalent to Design Director and 2 years of educational experience
  • Fluent English

Compensation package

Academic staff receive generous grants for accommodation, travel, children’s education, and medical insurance. A moving allowance is provided. Non-Chinese passport holders can benefit from multi-year “tax holidays”, depending on nationality and tax residency.

Employment at Xi’an Jiaotong-Liverpool University is regulated by Chinese labor laws and must comply with provincial government regulations. These regulations specify who is eligible for legal employment with respect to obtaining work permits and visas.
