Landscape and Industrial Design in the UNSW Sydney School Show


Landscaping that explores urban nature and an ergonomic chair designed for musicians are among the varied student projects on display in Part 2 of the UNSW Sydney School Show.

Each digital showcase project has been completed by students enrolled in Landscape Architecture, Industrial Design and Computer Design courses, all of which are part of the diverse built environment department at Australian University.

Continuum by Hayley Farrell

“The Landscape Narrative Continuum is the third chapter in the diverse cultural history of Saleyards Creek and its environs in Homebush, Sydney. Through a hierarchy of various programs moving away from the creek and referencing the history of the site, a new post-industrial landscape is emerging as the region’s social keystone, reconnecting Homebush to its waterways and industrial past.

“These spaces were designed within a framework of succession where ecology and culture develop in unison. This idea connects landscape concepts of ecological succession (driven by process) and landscape narratives (driven by history) through three key stages: introduction, development and balance.

Nature Protest by Ranine Hamed

“No matter how small, every organism plays a role in ensuring the function of the biosphere. Nature’s Protest challenges the position of non-human organisms in the human-dominated landscape. It captures the notion of biocentrism – the perception that humans are a part of the biosphere, rather than greater than it – by transforming Mason’s park and wetlands into ephemeral habitat that fosters protest through the spatial takeover of nature.

“To restore human position in the biosphere, humans are subtly coerced into being participants via a choreographed path that encompasses the various stages and experiences of the ephemeral life cycle.”

“This project reinvents Powell’s Creek and Mason Park through an exploration of the game and three tides of Powell’s Tide: the sea tide that crosses Powell’s Creek, the ecological tide, which refers to the green inhabitants and how they adapt. to the landscape, and the Tide, human circulation and interaction in the landscape.

“Under three principles of preservation, rehabilitation and reactivation, the poetry of the game offers an intriguing journey through the salt marsh wetland along walks designed by biomimicry. Visitors are encouraged to explore different types of games that mimic the ‘appearance or behavior of ecological communities, and thus regenerate empathy with local inhabitants. “

“Urban Wilderness as Urban Acupuncture is based in Newington Nature Reserve in Sydney Olympic Park, but provides a setting for the wild metropolis. It aims to refresh community attitudes towards the wilderness and bring the city back to the wild nature and wild nature in the city.

“Targeted and carefully considered design interventions allow existing natures to respond and grow. Unpretentious path systems and sensory spaces help people understand what wilderness is and discover wild features of dynamism, ambiguity, process and mutability.

“Step In and Out explores aesthetic considerations in the post-industrial landscape of the Brick Pit at Sydney Olympic Park. Through a review of aesthetic theory and case studies, a set of design and research methods has been established. with wide applicability to help designers better protect and reuse post-industrial cultural and aesthetic landscape values.

“By means of an assessment model and mapping, the material, spatial and temporal qualities of the site can be exploited to capture a point of tension between the picturesque aesthetic and the dialectic of the landscape.

“Half of the musicians in Sydney’s professional orchestras suffer musculoskeletal injuries due to the high physiological demands of the job. The chairs they sit on significantly influence their posture and overall physiological health.

“The Misura chair is a significant improvement over the leading orchestral chair on the market. The legs of the chair can be moved up and down and the backrest can be moved in four directions. Misura is lighter, thinner , quieter, easily stackable, user-friendly and stylish. It allows musicians of all shapes and sizes to easily adapt to their exact preferences every time. “

“01 promotes a pleasant sleep experience and improves sleep quality, by reducing sleep latency and improving deep sleep. It uses several therapy techniques, including cognitive behavioral therapy, sound therapy and light therapy for different situations.

“To improve the user’s overall sleep experience, 01 works in three phases: pre-bedtime, deep sleep enhancement, and natural awakening. helps and guides the user to relax, concentrate and meditate. The device can also be used as a Bluetooth speaker and as a pendant light. “

“When the Sydney Opera House was designed and built from 1959 to 1965, it pushed the boundaries of the construction and manufacturing of its time. The project commissioned by Opera Australia in 2016 called for a central bar table located in the VIP area pushing contemporary boundaries.

“In our second year, CODE – Computational Design studio III students applied their knowledge of algorithm-assisted design, structural optimization, and digital fabrication to produce a centerpiece that combines structural optimization and digital fabrication. this project the application of structural optimization on a furniture scale based on a new approach of custom optimization for structural nodes. “

“In cooperation with Arup Engineering Computational Design Bachelor, the second and third year students jointly developed, designed and manufactured a pod, a small internal meeting room, to test and study with our industrial partner four areas of expertise: the machine learning and AI, AR and VR, digital manufacturing and robotics and soft robotics.

The project ran over a year with a total of five courses associated with it. The project leveraged five different courses for students to engage in various emerging digital technologies and produce, as teaching outcomes and learning, the Centaur Pod Pavilion. “
