Industrial Design Conference Comes to James Madison University


The chapter of the Industrial Designers Society of America at James Madison University, in collaboration with the JMU School of Art, Design and Art History, will host the JMU 2021 conference, “Beyond the Box », From November 12th to 13th. This is the first time that JMU will host the event, which will bring together design professionals and students from the South and Central Atlantic to a loaded program of speakers, portfolio reviews, workshops and events. networking.

Martin Kastner joins the conference as part of the Dorothy Liskey Wampler Distinguished Professorship which annually brings together artists, scholars and critics invited to JMU. Kastner is a blacksmith turned food designer based in Chicago and Lyon, France. He is the founder of the award-winning Crucial Detail brand, which has explored the synergy of food and design for almost 20 years. He works at the forefront of gastronomy thanks to collaborations with the best chefs in the world. Martin is best known for his concepts of Alinea serving items, which placed him on the Future Laboratory’s 100 Most Influential People in Contemporary Design list.

Kastner will have an exhibition of his design work in the Grace Street Gallery at Duke Hall during the conference, open until December 1. Art gallery will have ID @ ArtWorks, an exhibition that follows the industrial design process from sketches and engravings to models and large installation parts

The conference is a rare opportunity for students to present their work to design professionals from companies such as Crucial Detail, Rain Agency, IBM Garage, Loop, Design Within Reach, Hightower, Hamilton Beach, TTi, etc. This feedback and networking are invaluable in helping design students launch their careers.

Associate Professor Audrey Barnes established the Industrial Design Major at JMU in 2015. Offering a Bachelor of Science degree, the program has over 60 students. The IDSA student chapter at JMU aims to foster strong social, educational and professional bonds within and beyond the industrial design community at JMU.
