BEIJING, May 17 (Xinhua) — Chinese companies are actively applying for international registration of industrial designs, the country’s top intellectual property regulator said Monday.

A total of 49 Chinese companies filed 108 international industrial design applications on May 5, the first day the Hague Agreement entered into force in China, according to data released by the National Intellectual Property Administration. (NIPA) during a press conference.

The Hague Agreement for the International Registration of Industrial Designs is a mechanism to protect intellectual property to help contracting parties gain worldwide protection for their industrial design.

NIPA received 58 such applications that day, with the number of applications from computer maker Lenovo, health technology company GEMT and smartphone maker Xiaomi topping the list, Wei said. Baozhi, a NIPA official.

Chinese enterprises continuously use the Hague System to develop their layout in the international product market, with the number of international applications submitted for designs rising to 141 from May 5 to 13, Wei said.

He noted that China’s entry into the Hague system shows its openness to participate in the global intellectual property governance system and provides opportunities for foreign companies to enter China’s dynamic and vast market.
