Camas will host the 2nd open house of phase 2 of the North Shore

City of Camas officials will be gathering feedback from the community this month on the future of its North Shore area north of Lacamas Lake.

The city will host an open house from 4-7 p.m. on August 17 at Lacamas Lake Lodge, as well as an online session at, to discuss the second phase of subzone planning in the area. of the North Shore.

“While (the first phase) of the sub-area planning process focused on developing a community vision for the North Shore, phase 2 focuses on guiding development in a way that implements implement the adopted vision statement,” the city said on its EngageCamas webpage dedicated to the North Shore.

The city of Camas annexed the 800 acres of land known as “Rive-Nord” into the city limits in 2010. At the time, city officials planned to use the primarily agricultural area for a mix of residential, commercial and industrial uses. And while landowners on the North Rim could develop the area based on these current zoning designations, officials hope the city’s nearly 4-year-old subzone planning process will help modify the North Rim, changing zoning overlays, protecting natural areas and giving the city a unique mix. recreational opportunities, housing options not found in other areas of Camas, local commercial businesses and some light industrial business parks located further from the lake at the northern end of the North Shore.

“While current uses are primarily agriculture and single family residences, most of the subarea is privately owned and the area is expected to experience substantial growth over the next 20 years,” the city said on its North Shore website.

The city heard from more than 1,100 community members during its first phase of planning for the North Shore sub-area. In September 2020, officials used this information to develop an eight-point Camas North Shore sub-area plan vision focused on preserving the natural beauty and environmental health of the area; planning a network of green spaces and recreational opportunities; grouped uses for more practicability; provide a range of housing options; located industrial parks and commercial center far from the lake; promote local businesses; planning for new schools and infrastructure; and striving to maintain the “small town vibe” of Camas.

The North Shore could, hopefully according to sub-area planning, the city said in its 2020 vision: “support the city’s quality of life through progressive and sustainable growth that contributes to community character.”

Now, city leaders want to gauge the public’s response to “three key recommendations” from city staff and the city’s North Shore consultants that would push planning for the sub-area into its final phase:

  • A privileged concept of land use and transport, which is a map indicating the location of the various land uses within the North Shore which also identifies the general location of the main arteries providing access to the North Shore;
  • New design guidelines and standards based on the eight-point vision that would guide the appearance of the North Shore; and
  • New zoning and master plan designations based on the approved land use and transportation concept and design guidelines that the city should adopt in its master plan and municipal code.

The August 17 North Shore Open House is the second time the city has reached out to the community to gather feedback on the second phase of planning for the North Shore sub-area.

The first open house was held online from February 16 to March 16 and asked people to comment on the North Shore design concepts which included a mix of parks and open spaces, residential areas, mixed use and commercial/industrial land uses.

About 1,700 people viewed the Open House online and nearly 100 people responded to the city’s related online survey, which asked them to comment in more detail on development concepts for the North Shore.

City staff forwarded these comments to the North Shore Steering Committee and Community Advisory Committee to develop a revised North Shore Land Use Plan.

The public will have a chance to view these revised land use plans at the second North Shore Phase 2 Open House on August 17 and can provide feedback via an online survey August 17-24 on EngageCamas .com.
