A Flintshire gym owner considered moving to larger premises in order to provide fitness facilities to a wider range of people.

Alex Austin currently runs a Mold based gymnasium and wants to move to an industrial unit in the Bromfield Industrial Estate.

The Stephen Gray Road building was last used to sell second-hand goods from home clearings, but had been left empty for around 18 months.

Mr Austin has now asked the Flintshire Council to change the use of the property for recreation.

In documents submitted to the local authority, he said it would allow the company to provide more services, including free self-defense classes on weekends.

He said: “We are currently a gym in Mold looking to relocate and expand while still being close to residents of Mold and surrounding areas.

“This unit offers substantial parking for us and a larger unit to offer more classes and services, including free weekend self defense classes with local volunteer coaches and an in-house athletic therapist available.

“It will also help create five to six new full-time jobs as well as two apprenticeships.

“We have spoken with a large number of current members who all agree that a larger space with improved parking is needed.

“Providing more services and attracting a wider range of people will create a healthy and friendly environment for everyone. “

Mr Austin said local boxing coaches have also expressed an interest in offering classes at the gym.

Comments are currently being solicited on the proposals through the council’s website, with a decision expected at a later date.
