A major strategic report on the cloud industry co-authored by Leaseweb will guide the investment priorities of the European Commission
Amsterdam, The Netherlands and Manassas, Virginia, USA – May 11, 2021 – Leaseweb Global, a leading hosting and cloud services companies, today announced its full support for the European roadmap of industrial technologies for the next-generation Cloud-Edge offering, details of which were published in the European Commission’s industrial strategy announcement. The roadmap sets a clear path to market innovation and global leadership in cloud and edge computing, and will be used by the European Commission to help establish funding priorities that accelerate the development of the European market for cloud. The creation of the roadmap will ensure that the EU builds the next generation of European cloud and edge offerings, expanding Europe on the global stage as it builds itself for the long term and creates a premier cloud ecosystem plan.
As co-author of the major strategic report, Leaseweb worked closely with other leading European organizations to identify investment priorities and recommendations. Leaseweb’s approval is representative of its continued commitment to advancing the European cloud ecosystem and accelerating its competitiveness, innovation and security on a global scale.
The roadmap, co-authored by 27 leading organizations in the European cloud industry and recently presented to European Commissioner Thierry Breton, details strategic investment priorities and recommendations to accelerate the development and adoption of a competitive, secure, reliable and climate neutral cloud and edge. services throughout the EU.
The roadmap highlights three main pillars of investment:
-
Leadership in areas that will shape and showcase European cloud and edge offerings in the global marketplace
-
Renew and expand infrastructure foundations across Europe
-
Provide sovereign and sectoral services to end users
Europe is already a big consumer of cloud computing technologies. Currently, 36% of businesses on the continent use cloud services, representing around 54 billion in direct cloud spending in the EU in the last year alone. In addition, this figure is expected to double by 2023. This represents a huge opportunity for European cloud players to innovate in spaces that have already proven to be top priorities for the EU in compliance, security, privacy, a increased focus on open European collaboration and transparency, removing cloud lockdown limitations and, of course, energy and resource efficiency – a priority recently highlighted in the Climate Neutral Data Center Pact.
Collectively, the bloc has set itself an ambitious goal of reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 55% by 2034 and achieving climate neutrality. To achieve this goal, the market will increasingly seek energy-efficient cloud infrastructure and services. Cloud computing and advanced computing, the backbone of today’s and future digital economy, can play an important role in achieving this laudable but ambitious goal.
Born in the pursuit of greater efficiency and optimal use of overcapacity, cloud computing can play a leading role in the fight against climate change by integrating environmental considerations into its equation. “Edge” deployments can help reduce data traffic and the resulting carbon footprint.
Commenting on the report and the roadmap announcement, Con Zwinkels, CEO of Leaseweb said: “We are proud to have participated in the development of the roadmap at a very important stage in history. of the cloud industry in Europe. This joint initiative of industry and the Commission to create investment policies and priorities helps to ensure that Europe strengthens its long-term technological competitiveness. Implementing the recommendations of our report will ensure that the continent develops a leading cloud and edge ecosystem. Leaseweb is proud to have participated in the writing process and looks forward to continued collaboration and innovation.
