From Clackamas College: Clackamas Community College challenges people to rethink the fields of manufacturing and machining. Once seen as heavy labor in dirty workshops, the college overturns industry ideology with the inauguration of its new Industrial Technology Center (ITC) on the Oregon City campus.
The 44,424 square foot facility is the new home for the college’s manufacturing, computer numerical control (CNC) and renewable energy programs, as well as other in-demand vocational technical education programs.
ITC will increase access to affordable education programs, allowing students to train for family-paying jobs or transfer to four-year universities. The facility includes a large manual and CNC lab space, flexible manufacturing / lab space, partner space, state-of-the-art machine tool technology, a large outdoor field lab for renewable energy, and an indoor event space / outside.
“This is not your grandfather’s workshop,” said Cynthia Risan, dean of technology, applied science and utilities. “Our students learn from knowledgeable industry instructors on modern equipment in a state-of-the-art facility.”
Students who earn a manufacturing certificate or diploma have a quick path to middle-income jobs. According to WorkSource, the average salary in manufacturing is $ 44,650 per year. The field currently has 94,110 jobs with the forecast of 26,315 other new jobs by 2025.
“The demand for employees in the machining, welding and renewable energy industries is extremely high right now,” said Mike Mattson, chair of the college’s manufacturing technology department. “Employers are on our doorstep looking for qualified employees. Our employment rates are basically 100 percent.”
For 17-19 year olds, Clackamas Community College offers the TechHire Grant to provide internship and work experience, educational opportunities in the manufacturing and allied industries, pre-career training and counseling for students. Visit www.clackamas.edu/TechHire.

To celebrate the completion of ITC, the college is hosting all-day activities for National Manufacturing Day on October 5. In the morning, high school students from neighboring school districts will tour the facilities, watch demonstrations and learn about career opportunities. In the afternoon, the college organizes a vendor fair and will end the day with a grand opening.
The community is invited to the grand opening, which begins at 4 p.m.
There will be a short program, a plaque dedication and a ribbon cut. After the program, participants will enjoy refreshments, watch machine demonstrations and take tours of the building.
The college is located at 19600 Molalla Ave., Oregon City. The $ 28 million project is funded by a bond as well as $ 8 million in consideration for the state of Oregon.
ITC is one of many bond-funded projects at Clackamas Community College. Voters approved a $ 90 million bond measure in November 2014 to expand opportunities for students and increase the skilled workforce in the community.
